On Wednesday of this week was the Las Vegas Bookman's Guild and our topic of conversation was books about transportation. There were a few very interesting presentations done by members of the guild and some wonderful examples shown.

Transportation - Motorcycles
The Impossible Collection of Motorcycles Book: The 100 Most Coveted Motorcycles of the Twentieth Centery by Ian Berry and Nicolas Stecher; Assouline Publishing 2013 Boxed edition. It is 172 pages with 150 illustrations. It is a collection of the 100 most exceptional bikes of the twentieth century. It is a deluxe volume; limited edition in a beautiful black rubber clamshell box with a cutout metal plate.
Indian Four Motorcycles by Jerry Hatfield; Motorbooks International 1998 paperback. Fast, expensive, and comfortable, the Four was an icon of affluence and performance during it's 15-year production span from 1927 to 1942. This color history makes extensive use of all-new color photos of restored Fours, along with black & white archival shots, to chronicle the design, evolution, and production of this much-revered motorcycle.
Motorcycle Dynamics by Vittore Cossalter; Race Dynamics Inc. 2002 Hardback. This book presents the theory of motorcycle dynamics. It is a technical book for the engineer, student, or technically/mathematically inclined motorcycle enthusiast. Motorcycle Dynamics offers a wealth of information compiled from the most up-to-date research into the behavior and performance of motorcycles. The structure of the book and the abundant graphs assist in understanding an exceptionally complicated subject.
Bike Riders by Danny Lyon; Macmillan, 1969 Hardback. One of the most iconic American photo books of the sixties. For this project, Lyon photographed and ultimately joined the Chicago Outlaws, a motorcycle racing club more interested in the emerging American biker culture than in winning on the track. Interestingly, some o fthe images in the book were originally shot in color, but financial limitations of the publisher necessitated publishing in black and white.
The Motorcycle Diaries: A Journey around South America by Ernesto Che Guevara; Verso, London 1995 Hardback. Translated by Ann Wright. Che's own account of a motorcycle tour he took with a close friend. This is the story of that remarkable journey, eight years before the Cuban revolution, in Che's own words, and illustrated with rare contemporary photographs. For Che it was a formative experience, and amidst the humor and pathos of the tale, there are moving examples of his idealism and his solidarity with the poor and oppressed. But it is far from being the diary of a militant and sometimes very far from being 'politically correct'.
And finally the report that was done by me:
Transportation – Ships
As we are focused on transportation, I have limited my research to non-military craft. From my searches online, it seems to me that the most sought after and expensive books deal not in identifying different types of ships, but those that were written by someone that has either survived a disaster at sea or taken a voyage. I have collected here the five most interesting books on the subject I could find.
-The Marvels of the Ship the story of the development of the ship from the earliest times Edward Keble Chatterton 1921 Seeley, Service & Co.
A vivid picture of the gradual growth of the evolution of ships from the days of her crude beginnings and limited utility to the time of publication where she had become so essential a feature of life at that time.
-Titantic and Other Ships by Commander Charles Herbert Lightoller (most senior officer to survive Titantic) This book details the wildly adventurous career of Titanic officer Charles Herbert Lightoller. After surviving the Titanic disaster, Lightoller went on to command a torpedo boat in the Nore Defence Flotilla, and two destroyers of the Dover Patrol. A first-hand account, giving a vivid picture of how the "gentlemen of the other firm" felt towards the U-boats. Lightoller sank Werner Fürbringer's UB-110, and it is interesting to compare his account of their encounter with the one in Fips.
-Voyage Pittoresque de la Grèce by Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier - Published in three volumes from 1782 to 1822, a “Scenic trip to Greece” was written over several journeys when de Choiseul-Gouffier was the French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, which controlled Greece at that time. The three volumes contain 285 engravings on 166 plates as well as numerous maps.
-Voyage de La Pérouse autour du Monde by Jean-François de Galaup - Published in 1798 by Plassan, this second edition set contains four octavo volumes and one atlas folio. They detail the journeys of explorer Jean-François de Galaup who was appointed by Louis XVI to lead an expedition around the world; and more specifically to complete and correct the Pacific maps of James Cook.
-Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum 1900
Challenged by an expert who said it couldn't be done, Joshua Slocum, a New England sea captain, set out in April of 1895 to prove that a man could sail alone around the world. 46,000 miles and a little over 3 years later, the proof was complete: Captain Slocum had performed the epic "first" single-handedly in a trusty 34-foot sloop called the "Spray." This is Slocum's own account of his remarkable adventures during the historic voyage.
Again this week I ask for any comments or suggestions you may have on all things Dragon Castle Books including the store, this website, or the blog. Please let me know so I can get better. We want you to enjoy your shopping experience with us and if there is something you think we can do better, let us know so we can address it.
That's all for now, I'll see you here next week, or maybe at the store before then. From both of us at Dragon Castle Books we hope you have a great week and look forward to seeing you at the store.
